A real "guys" guy
In my career, I am often sent off to training. This is common for my field, as the ever evolving nature of technology requires a good deal of evolution for those who support it. It is during these classes that one, if paying attention, can gain interesting, yet pointless insight into one's instructor. After all, they are up there all day, every day speaking, pontificating, and exposing their personality.
In almost every class, there is one overriding feature of the instructor that I come away with. This particular instructor? Well, he had a clear verbal tick. Where some people may use "uh", "um", or other such transitive words, he used the word "guys".
"So guys, what we see here is . . . "
"If you don't save the config here guys . . . "
"Look at these guys, this will show you guys . . . "
Seriously. So, as has become my hobby in such classes, I began to tally how many times he said "guys". Fortunately, I started very early on Monday (in a five day class). It got so bad, that midway through the week, I moved to electronic tallying, as I was suffering from carpal tunnel.
Here are the totals, for those who may think me to be exaggerating:
Mon: 324
Tue: 356
Wed: 400
Thu: 338
Fri: 272 (this was a short day, otherwise he was on a record pace)
Grand Total: 1690
Can you imagine how much he could trim down on class time, just by eliminating this word? If you calculate 1 second to speak each word, that comes out to roughly a half an hour spent saying "guys". a half an hour!! It's enough to make me want to follow him around and keep this tally running for the rest of his life. I wonder how many years he could save, over his lifetime?
